  • Part C, known as Medicare Advantage, is an alternative to Original Medicare
  • Part D offers coverage for prescription drugs

If you have Original Medicare, you can also sign up for a supplemental insurance plan (Medigap) to help with out-of-pocket costs. You can’t enroll in Medigap if you have a Medicare Advantage plan.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), 375,784 people in Maine are enrolled in Medicare.

Tips for enrolling in Medicare in Maine

To help narrow your options, keep these things in mind:

  • Provider network: To maximize the benefits of a Medicare Advantage plan, you may need to stay “in-network,” meaning you should receive care from a list of approved healthcare providers and facilities. Before enrolling, check that your care team is part of the network.
  • Prescription drugs: Compile a complete list of all your medications and compare it with the coverage offered by stand-alone prescription drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans that include drug coverage in your area. Before enrolling, make sure your medications are covered and available at a reasonable price.
  • Travel coverage: Some Medicare Advantage plans offer coverage outside the plan’s service area. If you travel often, it may be wise to choose a plan that provides coverage while you’re away from home.
  • Plan performance: The CMS publishes annual performance ratings for Medicare plans, which range from one to five stars, with five being the highest rating.
